Having fine hair is a blessing and a curse. It’s really easy to style, but the breakage you get from every little thing is unbearable. You have to worry about what kind of fabric your pillow is made out of, make sure that your hair isn’t wet when you’re putting it up into any hairstyle, and more. So, I have been on a hair journey over the last year, and one of the hardest things I’ve had to cut down on is styling my hair with hot tools. I didn’t cut them out completely because I can’t resist the look of fresh curls, but I now try to limit using hot tools to once a week, if possible!
One thing I should mention is that I’m a hair novice, and for most of my life, the most complex hairstyle I routinely and successfully accomplished was a quick curl. The minute a tutorial has bobby pins involved, I know it’s not for me. This being said, limiting my use of hot tools significantly limited the hairstyles I could do…by like 99%. So I started looking for quick and easy heatless hairstyles I could alternate throughout the week and came up with four!
1. Slick Back Bun
I taught myself how to do a slick back bun a few months ago and my life was forever changed. I’m not going to lie; I was so proud of myself! I used to think that my hair was too long for buns because they’d never stay in, but I learned a hack on TikTok!
After you perfect the slick back part, which honestly takes a lot of patience and product (linking my favorites below), the secret to a tight, slick back bun with long hair is all about tying knots. And I promise it’s much easier than it sounds β watch my tutorial below.
Products that I used:
@daehair styling cream & leave-in conditioner (they smell so good!)
@tangleteezer fine & fragile brush
@t3micro boar bristle brush & detail comb
2. Bow Sweet Bows
Everyone is obsessed with bows right now, and I’ve been loving adding them to any hairstyle I do. Braids, slick back buns, or even just a plain old half-up-half-down. I feel like I was transported back to high school when I was begging my parents to get me the viral American Apparel hair bows.
And I’d recommend just buying ribbon spools in different colors, as opposed to pre-made bow clips, since it tends to be much cheaper. That way, you can match the color to your chosen fall outfit, and I always get so many compliments when I do that.
3. Braids, Braids, Braids
I used to wear braids all the time as a kid, and I found my way back to them last fall. They’re so fun! If I’m styling clean hair, I’ll just do one on either side, but if my hair already has product in it from doing a slick back bun the day before, I do a slick back braid! This honestly might be my most worn look.
4. All the Claw Clips
I feel like I’m cheating by adding in this “hairstyle” because it’s just throwing your hair up in a claw clip, but if you’re someone who is always wearing your hair up in a ponytail, this could be a fun way to spice things up. There are tons of different claw clip styles, colors, and shapes. And you can also pick between a half-up-half-down look or putting up all your hair!
My favorite clip brand is Kov Essentials, and their Daily Clip is my go-to. They offer different-sized clips, so you can make sure that you get one that fits all of your hair! I’ll also link some other cute claw clips here!
Now that I’ve been working on limiting the amount of heat I apply to my hair, I really have noticed a difference and it’s been growing so much longer and stronger. If you’re having similar breakage issues, try adding these hairstyles to your rotation and let me know what you think! x
